Screening
Acacia dealbata / Mimosa
Acacia is a very attractive evergreen tree that is a relatively fast grower and makes for a good screening tree. A very attractive medium sized evergreen tree with fern-like foliage In late winter and early spring it will be covered in bright yellow bobbly flowers. Needs a sheltered site with good drainage.
Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin'
A small evergreen shrub or tree with brilliant red new growth from spring through till summer and white flowers.Eventual height is about 16-18ft.
Prunus laurocerasus / Cherry Laurel
A large shrub or small-medium spreading tree with large glossy dark green leaves with small white flowers in upright racemes in spring followed by bright red fruits which soon turn black.
Quercus ilex / Holm Oak,Evergreen Oak,Holly Oak.
A large evergreen tree with small leathery dark green leaves. Being an Oak this tree can get massive but with annual trimming it can be kept to almost any size without much maintenance. This tree is ideal for coastal positions.
Viburnum tinus 'Lucidum' / Laurustinus
A medium sized shrub or small tree with very large,very glossy leaves with clusters of white flowers in late spring. Good spreading habit growing up to around 14ft.
Ligustrum japonicum/lucidum / Chinese Privit
A small to medium sized tree which if left unclipped can produce a wonderfull naturally domed evergreen head. With glossy dark green foliage this makes a very good screening tree.
Ligustrum japonicum/lucidum 'Excelsium Superbum' Variegated / Chinese Privit
This tree is much the same as the type but witrh stunning variegated leaves. A great screening tree as it almost brings light in to the garden rather than block light out.
Cytisus battandieri / Morrocan Pineapple Broom
A tall shrub or small semi-evergreen tree with silky-silvery foliage and bright yellow cone shaped flowers in July that are pineapple scented.
Cotoneaster 'Cornubia'
A vigorous large shrub or small tree with mid-green leaves which will be very heavily laydened with masses of large red berries in autumn-winter eventualy growing to 15-20ft.
Cotoneaster 'Rothschildianus'
Much the same as cornubia but with lighter green glossy foliage and large clusters of creamy yellow berries.
Cordyline australis
Probably the best palm for sceening the Cordyline is a small tree usually forming a single trunk which starts to break out as soon as it starts flowering eventually forming a spreading bushy head whichin early summer develops a large dense mass of fragrent white flowers.
Olea europaea / Olive
This small to medium sized evergreen tree makes for a fantastic screening tree or a stand alone specimen. With grey-green leathery leaves which help to form a consitantly densly headed tree.Easily maintained as a shaped planted or just let to do it own thing.
Quercus suber / Cork Oak
Normally a clear stemmed wide spreading tree of medium size. Its bark is thick and corky and provides cork for your wine bottles! The leaves are oval or oblong,broadly toothed and leathery.
Phyllostachys nigra / Black Bamboo
A clump forming bamboo growing potentially up to 3.5 metres. The canes are normally green in the first year but slowly turn to a fantastic jet black.
Pseudosasa japonica 'Metake'. / "Arrow Bamboo"
Tall and imposing bamboo that can quickly reach 4m, and one of the most forgiving bamboos available, hugely tolerant of the sort of conditions that bamboos usually dislike. Leaves are long and strap-like and, although the slender canes are green, these are almost totally concealed by numerous biscuit coloured papery sheaths. The stems have a graceful arching habit, which provides a wide spreading canopy.
Happy in full sun or partial shade not bad for exposed costal gardens.
Keep well watered in summer.
Mature height 3.5 – 4m.
Callistemon citrinus 'Splendens'
A vigorous spreading tree or shrub with very graceful arching branches and brilliant scarlet bottlebrush like flowers.
Griselinia littoralis
A dense evergreen shrub which makes an ideal hedging plant for gardens right next to the sea. Not only is it tough it is also attractive. Leaves are a leathery apple-green colour.
Eriobotrya japonica / Loquat
A very architectural plant which works as a large shrub or tree and favoured for its striking evergreen foliage. After a good hot summer it will produce hawthorn-like scented flowers and then unusual yellow edible fruits.
Arbutus unedo / Strawberry tree
Strawberry tree. A large evergreen shrub or small tree withstand a coastal position.Rough reddish-brown bark which flakes.The main feature is the spectacular white flowers followed by the red strawberry fruit.Leaves
