Morus nigra is a slow-growing, medium-sized, dense, broad-crowned, deciduous tree with heart-shaped, ovate, dark green leaves, yellow in autumn. Small, inconspicuous, greenish flowers grow in catkins and bloom in summer and are followed by edible, large, juicy, dark purplish-red fruits, in late summer and early autumn. Fruits are superior in taste to white mulberry and can be used for making jams and jellies. Black Mulberry thrives in fertile, hummus-rich, moist, well-drained soils, in full sun. It is resistant to heat, cold and urban pollution. It needs to be sheltered from harsh winds. Low maintenance plant, doesn’t require pruning. Generally, pest-free. Morus nigra is an ornamental tree, great as a specimen plant or a shade tree for informal, cottage, and urban gardens. Excellent when planted in groups, for informal hedges and screens, as a windbreak, or erosion control. Since tolerant of urban pollution, perfect for streets, roadsides, and parks. Suitable for growing in pots and containers.
