Myrtus communis is a medium-sized, round, neat and tidy, evergreen shrub with small, aromatic, ovate, glossy green leaves. Masses of fragrant, small, white flowers with yellow stamens bloom in mid-spring and late summer. Flowers are followed by edible purplish-black berries in autumn. Common Myrtle thrives in a moderately fertile, loamy, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun or partial shade. Once established, it is resistant to drought. Generally, pest-free and disease-free. As a Mediterranean plant, it requires long, hot summers to produce flowers and fruits. It needs to be sheltered form cold, drying winds. In colder areas, it can be grown in containers and brought inside during the winter. Low maintenance plant. Myrtus communis is a beautiful, compact evergreen shrub, perfect for wall-side borders, shrub borders, and hedges and screens. Great for cottage, urban and coastal gardens. Suitable for growing in containers. Its leaves are used for medical and culinary purposes. Fruits and flowers are edible.
