Polygonatum biflorum, or Great Solomon's seal, is a large, upright, slightly arching, rhizomatous perennial with oblong, smooth, mid-green leaves, yellow in autumn, and clusters of yellowish-green to white, bell-shaped flowers hanging from leaf axils and blooming in late spring. Flowers are followed by ornamental dark purple berries in autumn and winter. The root is rhizomatous but non-colonizing. Polygonatum biflorum prefers to grow in fertile, humus-rich, medium to wet, well-drained soils. It thrives in partial to full shade. Doesn’t like hot summer conditions. Resistant to frost, but needs to be sheltered. Virtually, pest-free and disease-free, but slugs may be a problem. Low maintenance plant, doesn’t require pruning. Great Solomon's seal is a lovely, shade-loving plant perfect for shady corners of informal, cottage, and woodland gardens. Excellent for beds and borders, rock gardens, and shade gardens. Great when planted in groups and masses. Attractive to bees, birds, and butterflies. Good companion to hostas, ferns, and other shade-loving plants.
