Acer palmatum 'Scolopendriifolium Atropurpureum' is a small, slow-growing deciduous shrub or small tree with upright, spreading, slightly cascading habit and long bamboo-like foliage. Thin, palmate, deeply-divided, ferny, lobed leaves, on dark purple stems, are light green in spring, darker green in summer, and yellow in autumn. Corymbs of red flowers emerge in mid spring, before the leaves. It grows best in moist, but well-drained soil of any type, in full sun or partial shade. Leaves achieve the best colour when in partial shade. Lack of soil moisture and excess exposure can cause leaf scorch. It should be sheltered from harsh winds. Somewhat tolerant to urban pollution. Acer palmatum 'Scolopendriifolium Atropurpureum' makes a great accent feature. Its long, ferny, palmate leaves are highly ornamental and attractive. Low maintenance plant. Perfect for small, urban and cottage gardens, Suitable for growing in containers.
