Betula ermanii, or Erman’s Birch, is an elegant, medium-sized, fast-growing, vigorous, deciduous tree with broadly conical habit. It has an attractive creamy or pinkish white peeling bark on the trunk, and papery orange-brown bark on the branches. Its leaves are ovate, heart-shaped, bright green, turning golden yellow in autumn. Small, yellow flowers in long catkins emerge together with the leaves. It has shallow root and dense rooting system. Erman's Birch can grow in various types of soil, as long as they are moist, and well drained. It thrives in full sun or partial shade. It is resistant to frost, but doesn’t tolerate paving, hard surfaces, and coastal winds. Low maintenance plant, requires very little pruning. Betula ermanii is a beautiful, elegant tree, attractive throughout the year, especially in winter. It is perfect as a specimen plant or planted in beds and borders. Great for cottage or urban gardens.
