Large, fragrant, white flowers start blooming in June and continue blooming in autumn, changing their colour into pink. Abelia grandiflora Magic Daydream prefers moist, well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade. It is very easy to care for. Maintains its tidy form with almost no pruning. It is not full hardy, therefore, in colder areas it needs to be sheltered. This amazing plant can be used for hedges, in flower borders and beds, on slopes, or as a ground cover. Abelia Radiance is a small, naturally compact, ball-shaped, semi-evergreen shrub with arching, vivid red branches. Glossy, oval, light green leaves, with creamy white margins, emerge in spring and slowly turn silvery green with creamy yellow margins later on. It is naturally compact and maintains its density and colour throughout the year. Abelia 'Edward Goucher' is a hybrid between Abelia × grandiflora and Abelia schumannii. It is developed in 1911. by Edward Goucher of the United States Department of Agriculture. It’s a broadleaf semi-evergreen shrub with reddish branches, glossy, dark green leaves that turn purplish in autumn, and small lilac-pink trumpet-shaped flowers with bronze-tinged calyx lobes. Abelia 'Edward Goucher' is very easily grown in average, medium moist, well-drained soil. It thrives in full sun and is resilient to pests and diseases. Needs pruning in late winter or early spring, and hard pruning every 3 or 4 years. This compact, bushy shrub with fragrant pink flowers is perfect for cottage or urban gardens, for planting in beds and borders, and for growing in containers. Its elegantly arching branches makes it a great specimen plant. It can be used for informal hedges but may lose its elegant appearance if formally shaped.

Choosing an evergreen shrub will provide screenage all year round, and they can even act as a windbreak. Most evergreen shrubs require little maintenance to keep them looking good, so they are an excellent choice if time is a premium. Despite being evergreen, they will always shed their old foliage each year as the new growth starts to appear.
When visiting Arundel Arboretum, we will be able to advise you on the best plants for your conditions and position of your garden. For example, if you live near the sea you will need to choose plants that can cope with the salt and wind. You also need to give consideration to the location of the planting position – will it be near a wall, building or pathway for instance?

Hoheria sexstylosa ‘Snow White’
This evergreen shrub produces masses of stunning white flowers during the summer months. It has a pyramidal shape, with an eventual height of 5m. The leaves are deeply serrated around the edges. It can be pruned to keep its shape and height. Alternatively, it is an ideal choice to create an evergreen hedge.
Hoheria sexstylosa ‘Snow White’ is classed as a reasonably hardy tree and should be able to withstand temperatures between -5 to -10. It will be happy in full sun in a good, well-drained soil. However, if you plant your tree in an exposed position or in adverse weather conditions it can get damaged. We would recommend providing shelter in cold areas.
