Prunus domestica ‘Opal’ is a vigorous, compact, deciduous, fruiting tree with spreading habit, lush, glossy, green foliage and small, white flowers blooming in early spring. It’s a cross between gage and plum and produces heavy crops of delicious, large, sweet and juicy, green to yellow fruits ready for harvesting in late summer. Prunus domestica ‘Opal’ will grow well in most soil types, but prefers moderately fertile, neutral, sandy or loamy, consistently moist, well-drained soils. It thrives in full sun. It is resistant to frost, but need to be protected from harsh winter winds. Late spring frosts may damage the flower buds. It is self-fertile but for good crops it needs a pollinating partner nearby. It may require some pruning and fruit thinning. Plum ‘Opal’ is a tough and relatively undemanding plant grown primarily for its delicious fruits, but also has some ornamental value. Plums can be eaten fresh, used for making jams and preserves, as well as plum brandy.
