Rhododendron ‘Nova Zembla’ is a tough, bushy, vigorous, evergreen shrub with thick, ovate, glossy, dark green leaves and a profusion of large, funnel-shaped, ruby-red flowers with maroon-spotted throats, blooming in May and June. Rhododendron ‘Nova Zembla’ grows best in acidic, organically rich, evenly moist, well-drained soils. It prefers dappled shade, but can withstand strong sun. Its roots are shallow and poor drainage may lead to a root rot. It is tolerant of frost and air pollution. Very hardy and easy to grow, even in cold climates. Needs to be sheltered from strong winds. Low maintenance plant, doesn’t require much pruning. Susceptible to many insect and disease problems. Rhododendron ‘Nova Zembla’ is a versatile landscape shrub, one of the most popular red rhododendrons for severe climates. It is perfect as a specimen or foundation plant in informal, cottage, woodland, and urban gardens. Excellent for shade gardens. Great for beds and borders, banks and slopes, or informal hedges.
