Sorbus commixta is a compact, conical, deciduous tree, with ascending crown when young and broad oval when mature and pinnate, dark green leaves, red, yellow, and purple in autumn. Small, creamy-white flowers bloom in spring and are followed by clusters of bright orange berries in autumn. Attractive to birds and bees. Japanese Mountain Ash thrives in moderately fertile, slightly acidic, moist, well-drained soils, but is adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions, except waterlogged. It grows best in full sun to partial shade. It is resistant to frost, wind, and urban pollution, but doesn’t like maritime exposure. Low maintenance plant. Sorbus commixta is one of the best Mountain Ash trees for autumn colour. Very decorative and resilient, it is perfect as a specimen or accent plant in cottage, wildlife or urban gardens with limited space. Great for streets and avenues. Suitable for growing in containers on patios and roof gardens.
