Teucrium fruticans, or Shrubby Germander, is a sturdy, spreading, evergreen shrub with white, hairy, arching stems, and small, aromatic, ovate, glossy, grey-green leaves, silvery-white underneath, which creates a glowing effect. Tiny, light blue flowers bloom in summer and are attractive to bees and butterflies. Teucrium fruticans can grow in a wide range of soils, even poor and rocky ones, except waterlogged. It prefers medium to dry, loose, slightly alkaline, well-drained soils in full sun. Once established, resistant to drought. It can withstand light frost, but needs to be sheltered from harsh winter winds. It’s a Mediterranean plant, tolerant of heat, wind, and salt spray. Generally, pest-free and disease-free. Low maintenance plant, doesn’t require pruning. Shrubby Germander is an attractive, ornamental shrub, extremely tough, adaptable and resilient. It is suitable for cottage and urban gardens, but perfect for coastal and rock gardens. Excellent for beds and borders, wall-side borders, and low hedges. Suitable for pots and containers.
