Viburnum cinnamomifolium is a dense, rounded, evergreen shrub with large, leathery, deeply veined, narrowly oval, dark green leaves, soft green when young. Clusters of small, inconspicuous, white flowers are followed by blue-black berries. The stalks, twigs, and flower buds are carmine red from late summer onwards. Cinnamon-leaved Viburnum is not a demanding plant. It can adapt to a wide range of soils, but prefers average, moderately fertile, slightly acidic, evenly moist, well-drained soils. It thrives in full sun and partial shade. It is resistant to frost but needs to be sheltered from winter sunlight and harsh winds. Flower buds may be damaged by late frosts. Low maintenance plant, doesn’t require much pruning, but can withstand hard pruning if needed. Viburnum cinnamomifolium is a beautiful, exotic-looking shrub, perfect for informal, cottage, urban, and coastal gardens. Excellent for beds and borders, shrub borders, and wall-side borders. Great when planted with mid-sized conifers.
