Prunus serrula, or Tibetan Cherry Tree, is a medium-sized, rounded, deciduous tree with a stunning, glossy, peeling, coppery-brown to mahogany bark with horizontal lenticels and narrow, lance-shaped, willow-like, dark green leaves, golden yellow in autumn. Small, white flowers bloom in spring and are followed by red, cherry-like fruit. Attractive to birds and bees.
Tibetan Cherry Tree grows best in fertile, organically rich, moist, well-drained soils, but it is adaptable to moist soils and garden conditions. It prefers full sun to partial shade. Tolerant of urban pollution, therefore, suitable for urban areas. Low maintenance plant, doesn’t require much pruning.
The unusual, glowing and peeling bark is the main ornamental feature of the Prunus serrula tree, especially in winter, and it is best to be grown in a place where the bark will be seen. It is perfect as a specimen plant in cottage, urban, and wildlife gardens. Great for beds and borders.
