Prunus 'Accolade' is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree that is highly valued for its stunning display of pink flowers in spring. It is a hybrid of Prunus sargentii and Prunus subhirtella, and was first introduced in Japan in the 1950s. In spring, the tree produces large, semi-double, pink flowers that emerge from deep pink buds. The flowers are borne in clusters along the branches and create a beautiful show of colour. As the season progresses, the leaves emerge, providing a fresh green backdrop for the flowers. In the fall, the leaves turn a vibrant shade of orange-red, adding to the tree's ornamental appeal. Prunus 'Accolade' is a relatively slow-growing tree, reaching a height of around 20 feet (6 meters) with a similar spread. It has a vase-shaped habit, with a broad, spreading crown and a single trunk. The bark is smooth and grey-brown, and the branches are slender and somewhat weeping. This tree prefers a well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. It is generally low maintenance and has few pest or disease problems. It is a great choice for a small garden or as a specimen tree in a larger landscape.
