The strawberry tree 'Rubra' is an evergreen multistem tree, valued for its year-round interest and attractive form. The foliage is dark glossy green, leathery and finely serrated, providing a dense, bushy canopy throughout the year. As a multistem specimen, it develops an attractive, rounded structure with striking reddish-brown bark that peels and flakes with age, adding textural interest even in winter. This cultivar is particularly noted for its autumn display, when clusters of deep pink, bell-shaped flowers appear alongside the previous year's strawberry-like fruits, creating a striking combination of blossom and fruit on the tree at the same time. The fruits ripen from yellow to red and have a rough, textured skin resembling strawberries, though they are not generally considered palatable. The late-season flowers provide a valuable source of nectar for bees and other pollinators at a time when few other plants are in bloom, supporting biodiversity into the autumn months. The fruits are also attractive to birds, offering an additional food source as other seasonal supplies diminish. This tree is well suited to coastal gardens, tolerating exposed and salt-laden conditions, and performs well in poor, well-drained soils, including chalky ground, making it a versatile choice for challenging planting sites.
