Chinese Privet 'Excelsum Superbum' is an evergreen tree, retaining its foliage throughout the year. The leaves are glossy and broadly ovate, with creamy-yellow variegated margins surrounding a deep green centre, giving the foliage a bright, eye-catching appearance that is particularly striking in winter when many other trees are bare. Grown as a multistem, this tree develops a dense, rounded crown with a strong branching structure, making it a good specimen tree for year-round structure and screening in a garden setting. During summer, large panicles of small, creamy-white flowers appear, adding a further decorative element to the variegated foliage. These are followed in autumn by clusters of small blue-black berries, which persist into winter and provide visual interest as the display continues. The flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinating insects, while the berries provide a valuable food source for birds during the colder months, making this tree useful for supporting garden wildlife. This tree is tolerant of a wide range of conditions, including coastal exposure and urban pollution, and performs well in most well-drained soils. It is also a good choice for providing shelter and screening in a mixed border or as a focal specimen tree.
