Persian Ironwood is a deciduous multistem tree valued for its year-round interest. The foliage emerges with a reddish-purple tinge in spring before maturing to a glossy dark green through summer, then transforms into a spectacular display of red, orange and yellow tones in autumn, often holding several colours simultaneously on the same tree. As a multistem specimen, it develops an attractive spreading, layered structure with flaking grey and fawn bark that becomes increasingly ornamental as the tree matures, providing textural interest even in winter once the leaves have fallen. In late winter, small clusters of red-stamened flowers appear on the bare branches before the foliage emerges, adding subtle colour during the quieter months of the garden calendar. The dense, rounded canopy formed by the multiple stems offers good shade coverage and makes a striking focal point in any planting scheme. Persian Ironwood is adaptable to a range of soil types, including clay and loamy soils, and tolerates both full sun and partial shade. It is a low-maintenance choice that performs well in most garden settings, offering structural presence alongside exceptional seasonal colour.
