Parrotia persica 'Persian Spire', commonly known as Persian Ironwood, is a deciduous multistem tree valued for its striking foliage and elegant structure. The leaves emerge with a reddish-purple tinge in spring before maturing to a glossy dark green through summer. In autumn the foliage transforms into a spectacular display of orange, red and purple tones, making this one of the most reliable trees for autumn colour. The multistem habit gives the tree an attractive, spreading structure with a moderate density of branching, allowing the bark to be appreciated once leaves have fallen. As the tree matures, the bark exfoliates to reveal patches of grey, green and brown, adding year-round visual interest. Small, inconspicuous red flowers appear in late winter before the leaves emerge, providing an early source of nectar for pollinators at a time when little else is in bloom. This tree is tolerant of a range of soil types, including clay, and performs well in both full sun and partial shade. It is a versatile choice for gardens of varying sizes, working well as a specimen tree or within mixed planting schemes.
