Prunus subhirtella 'Autumnalis', commonly known as the Autumn Flowering Cherry, is a deciduous multistem tree valued for its extended flowering period. Semi-double white flowers, tinged with pink in bud, appear intermittently from late autumn through to early spring, often opening during mild spells between November and March, providing interest during the quieter winter months. In spring, the tree produces a further flush of blossom, coinciding with the emergence of fresh green foliage. The foliage turns shades of yellow and orange in autumn before leaf fall, adding seasonal colour. The multistem form gives the tree an open, spreading habit with a light, airy canopy, making it a good choice where a less formal or more naturalistic silhouette is desired. The winter and early spring flowers provide an early source of nectar for pollinating insects such as bees, at a time when few other flowering plants are available, offering a useful biodiversity benefit within gardens and landscaped areas. This tree is suited to a range of garden settings and tolerates most well-drained soils, including chalk, clay and loam. It performs best in a sunny or partially shaded position and is a reliable choice for smaller gardens given its moderate, manageable size as a multistem specimen.
