Pomegranate is a deciduous fruit tree, here trained as an attractive multistem specimen with several trunks rising from the base to form an open, spreading habit. The glossy, narrow leaves emerge with a bronze tinge in spring before maturing to mid-green, then turning yellow in autumn, providing seasonal interest across the year. In summer, striking funnel-shaped flowers appear in shades of orange-red, with crumpled, papery petals that give way to the familiar rounded fruits by early autumn. These ripen to a rich red or yellow-red colour, splitting slightly to reveal the juicy, seeded interior when mature, in a warm, sheltered position. The flowers are attractive to pollinating insects, making this tree a useful addition for garden biodiversity. The multistem form lends architectural structure to borders or lawns, with the twisted, textured bark adding further character, particularly during the winter months once the leaves have fallen. Pomegranate is well suited to warm, sheltered, sunny sites and benefits from free-draining soil, performing best against a south-facing wall or in a sunny courtyard where it can take advantage of reflected heat. It makes an excellent specimen tree for patios or sheltered garden areas, where both its ornamental and fruiting qualities can be appreciated.
