Pomegranate is a deciduous fruit tree, here trained as an attractive multistem specimen with several trunks rising from the base to form an open, spreading habit. The glossy, narrow leaves emerge with a bronze tint in spring before maturing to mid-green, then turning yellow in autumn, giving seasonal interest at both ends of the growing season. In early summer, striking funnel-shaped flowers appear in shades of orange-red, with crumpled, waxy petals that are followed, in warm sheltered positions, by the familiar round fruits. These ripen through late summer into autumn, developing a leathery red-brown skin and filled with juicy, jewel-like seeds. The flowers are attractive to pollinating insects, offering a nectar source during the summer months. This multistem form suits a sunny, sheltered spot such as a courtyard, patio or south-facing border, where its twisted stems and textured bark provide structural interest even when the tree is bare in winter. Pomegranate performs best in free-draining soil and benefits from the protection of a warm wall or sunny aspect in cooler climates, making it a good choice for a sheltered garden setting where both its ornamental and fruiting qualities can be enjoyed.
