Sweet Chestnut is a deciduous multistem tree, grown here with several trunks rising from the base to create an open, spreading habit. The foliage consists of long, glossy, dark green leaves with sharply serrated edges, turning rich shades of yellow and gold in autumn before falling. In early summer, the tree produces long, pale yellow-green catkins which give off a distinctive scent and provide a source of pollen and nectar for bees and other pollinating insects. These are followed in autumn by spiny green husks containing edible chestnuts, which fall to the ground once ripe. The nuts are a valuable food source for small mammals and birds, while the tree itself, with its furrowed bark and multistem form, offers shelter and habitat for insects and nesting birds as it matures. The multistem structure gives the tree a characterful, naturalistic appearance, making it well suited to parkland and larger garden settings where it has room to develop. It tolerates a range of soil conditions, including acidic and well-drained soils, and is reasonably resistant to wind once established, making it a good choice for exposed or open sites.
