Acer rubrum Red Sunset is a medium-sized, deciduous tree with good branch structure and dense, pyramidal crown that becomes rounded as the tree matures. Glossy, palmate, 5-lobed leaves are green in spring and summer, and intensive orange to dark green in autumn. First to colour up in autumn, it retains its leaves for a long time. Red flowers in small umbrellas appear in spring and are followed by samaras. It can grow in wide range of soils, but prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil with full sun to partial shade. It is cold hardy but very sensitive to salt, and doesn’t tolerate sea wind, therefore, not suitable for coast. It is a good choice for a shade tree in larger landscapes, and great for planting in broad streets and parks. Red Sunset Maple was bred and first introduced by J. Frank Schmidt & Sons nursery, from Oregon in 1966.
