Cornus kousa 'Beni-fuji' is a captivating cultivar of the Japanese dogwood, admired for its stunning seasonal display and manageable size, making it a versatile addition to gardens large and small. This deciduous small tree or large shrub is native to East Asia, where it thrives in woodlands and temperate climates. 'Beni-fuji' is celebrated for its graceful form, vibrant foliage, and striking flowers.

In late spring to early summer, the tree showcases an impressive display of star-shaped bracts that surround its small, inconspicuous green flowers. These bracts, a hallmark of Cornus kousa, emerge in shades of pink to rosy red, deepening as they mature. The blooms sit atop horizontal branches, creating a layered, tiered effect that adds structural elegance to its appearance.

As the seasons progress, 'Beni-fuji' transforms further. By late summer, the tree produces small, strawberry-like fruits, which are edible and can attract birds to the garden. In autumn, its foliage takes centre stage, turning rich shades of crimson, orange, and scarlet, providing a final burst of colour before winter dormancy.

This cultivar prefers well-drained, fertile soil and thrives in full sun to partial shade, making it relatively easy to accommodate in a range of garden settings. It has a compact growth habit, typically reaching a height of 3-4 metres, making it suitable for smaller gardens or as a specimen plant in borders.

Cornus kousa 'Beni-fuji' is not only ornamental but also resilient, tolerating a range of soil types and proving relatively disease-resistant. Its year-round appeal—flowering in summer, fruiting in autumn, and showcasing vibrant foliage—ensures its popularity among gardeners seeking a dynamic and visually rewarding plant for their landscape.

Feijoa (acca) sellowiana, or Pineapple Guava, is an attractive, evergreen shrub or small tree, with oblong, silvery green leaves, white-felted underneath. Unusual flowers with four red petals, white on the outside, and red stamens with yellow tips, appear singly or in clusters. They are edible and taste like marshmallows. Flowers are followed by edible, tough-skinned, red-flushed, green fruit with pineapple-spearmint flavour. Pineapple Guava loves full sun, and prefers light, moist, well-drained soils. The consistent soil moisture is very important for the production of fruits. It can tolerate a wide range of soil types and partial shade. It is moderately tolerant of salt and drought, therefore, suitable for coastal areas. Generally, pest-free and disease-free. Low maintenance, doesn’t require much pruning. Feijoa (acca) sellowiana is a unique, ornamental shrub, ideal for urban, coastal, and Mediterranean gardens. Perfect as a specimen or accent plant, great for wall-side borders, hedges and screens, or for growing in containers.

Fagus sylvatica Purpurea, or Copper Beech, is a beautiful variant of European Beech. It’s a large, deciduous tree with pyramidal crown when young, rounded and spreading when mature, and smooth, grey bark. It is known for its deep purple foliage, copper red in autumn. Small, inconspicuous, yellowish flowers appear in spring and are followed by edible fruit, beech mast, in autumn. Fagus sylvatica Purpurea prefers deep, rich, moist, well-drained soils, in full sun or partial shade. It doesn’t tolerate waterlogged soils or heavy clay. Once established, somewhat tolerant to drought. It is generally disease-free and pest-free. Easy to grow, low maintenance plant. It may not grow well in urban areas and it is difficult to transplant. Fagus sylvatica Purpurea, with its dramatic purple and coppery foliage, is perfect as a specimen plant in large gardens or parks. Great for hedges and screens, especially since it holds dead leaves deep into winter, almost until new leaves emerge.
