Roots can be invasive.
White Poplar is easily grown in a wide range of soils and soil conditions, even poorly-drained, except constantly waterlogged. It thrives in average, moist, well-drained soils. It prefers full sun. It is tolerant of salt and winds, therefore, suitable for coastal areas. Attractive to bees and birds. Low maintenance plant. Populus alba, with its attractive foliage, is a great ornamental tree, perfect for very large woodland gardens or parks. Excellent as a windbreak or a screen tree. Not suitable for streets or near the houses because of its vigorous roots and messy tendencies.

£325.00
Unit price perOlive trees (Olea europaea) are an excellent choice for adding a Mediterranean feel to a UK garden, combining evergreen foliage, an attractive silvery appearance and a naturally characterful shape. They are well suited to many parts of the UK when planted in the right position and given good drainage.
Olive trees prefer a sunny, sheltered location where they receive plenty of direct sunlight. A south- or west-facing position is particularly suitable, ideally protected from strong, cold winds. They are tolerant of dry conditions once established and generally prefer soil that is free draining rather than consistently wet. Heavy or poorly drained ground can increase the risk of root problems, so improving drainage before planting may be beneficial.
Established olive trees are reasonably hardy in the UK, although younger plants can be more vulnerable during prolonged periods of severe frost. Container-grown specimens can be moved to a sheltered position during particularly cold weather.
Olive trees are relatively low maintenance and naturally develop an attractive, gnarled structure as they mature. They can also be lightly pruned to maintain their shape and size.
With plenty of sunshine, good drainage and some protection from severe winter weather, an olive tree can become a long-lived and highly attractive feature in a UK garden.

Photinia x fraseri Robusta is great as an accent plant, but perfect for tall hedges and screens which are useful for noise reduction or wind protection in cottage and urban gardens.
