Acer palmatum 'Twombly's Red Sentinel' is a dense, slow-growing, deciduous shrub or small tree with narrowly upright columnar growth habit. Over time, it becomes more spreading and bushy. Its small, palmate, 5-lobed leaves emerge bright red in spring, become purple-red or burgundy in summer, and scarlet red in autumn. In winter, bark and branches are blood red, adding to its ornamental value. Red Sentinel Japanese maple loves rich, moist, but well-drained soils, though it can grow in any soil type. The foliage has best colour in partial shade, but it is tolerant to full sun. Needs to be watered regularly and sheltered from harsh winds. Lack of soil moisture and excessive exposure can cause leaf scorch. Acer palmatum 'Twombly's Red Sentinel', with its narrow upright habit and refined foliage, is a perfect option for small gardens and great as specimen plant. It is suitable for urban and cottage gardens, and for growing in pots and containers.
