Malus ‘John Downie’ is an ornamental, deciduous tree with wide, oval to round, half-open crown, and ovate, glossy, green leaves, buttery-yellow in autumn. Lovely, single, white flowers that open from pink buds, bloom in May and are followed by plum-like, firm and crunchy, orange-red fruits, that remain on branches throughout the winter. These crab apples are tasteful and great for jams and jellies. Attractive to birds and bees. Malus ‘John Downie’ can grow well in almost any type of soil, as long as it is well-drained, but thrives in moderately fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun or partial shade. Once established, it is resistant to drought. It can withstand frost, wind, and urban pollution. Generally, disease-free. Low maintenance plant, doesn’t require much pruning. Malus ‘John Downie’ is a lovely ornamental tree, ideal for smaller informal, cottage and urban gardens. It is very popular for its delicious fruits great for culinary use.

Arundel Arboretum is a shrub and tree retail nursery with over 40 years of experience.

About Us

During this time, we have developed a large stock of trees, mature evergreen shrubs, conifers, Japanese maples, cedars and olives. What sets us apart from a generic garden center is solid unwavering focus on trees and some bigger shrubs. You will find thousands of trees, hundreds of varieties and lots of experts who are working on the nursery and more than willing to help you to choose a plant for you.

What you will not find is hot tubs, garden furniture and plastic garden gnomes. In a nutshell, trees is what we know and trees is what we do, and only trees (and some shrubs to go with the trees).
