Aralia elata, or Angelica tree, is a large, deciduous shrub or small tree with irregular form. Its spreading habit can be single or multi-stemmed. The rough grey bark is covered in sharp prickles. Spiny, unbranched stems have an umbrella-like canopy of large, bi-pinnate, dark green leaves that turn pale yellow and red in autumn. Tiny, creamy white flowers bloom in late summer and autumn and are followed by clusters of small, purple to black berries, ripening in September. Angleica tree is easily grown in any type of soil, even rocky and clay, but prefers average, moist and well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade. It should be sheltered from strong winds. It tolerates drought and urban air pollution and is, generally, disease-free. Aralia elata is perfect for shrub borders and woodland gardens. Not very suitable for small home gardens, since it is fast-growing and can be very invasive.
