Camellia sasanqua 'Hiryu' is a stunning evergreen shrub that is highly prized for its delicate and beautiful blooms. This plant is a member of the Camellia family and is native to Japan. It typically grows to be about 6-10 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide, making it an excellent choice for a specimen plant in a garden or as a hedge. 'Hiryu' is known for its profuse, semi-double, bright pink flowers that bloom in the fall and early winter. The flowers are about 2-3 inches in diameter and have a sweet fragrance. They contrast beautifully against the glossy, dark green foliage, which has a slightly serrated edge. The leaves of the plant are also slightly smaller and more narrow than other Camellia sasanqua varieties, giving it a more delicate appearance. This plant is relatively easy to grow and care for, and it prefers well-drained, acidic soil. It does best in partial shade but can tolerate full sun in cooler climates. It is also drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering in hot, dry weather.
