Caryopteris x clandonensis 'Kew Blue', commonly known as bluebeard, is a deciduous shrub forming a compact, rounded mound. The grey-green foliage is aromatic when crushed, releasing a distinctive scent, and provides a soft textured backdrop throughout the growing season. This shrub comes into its own in late summer and early autumn, when clusters of deep violet-blue flowers appear along the stems, creating a vivid display at a time when many other shrubs have finished flowering. The flowers are produced on new growth, so pruning hard in spring encourages a profusion of blooms later in the year. The flowers are highly attractive to bees and butterflies, making this shrub a valuable source of late-season nectar for pollinators. Its presence in a garden supports biodiversity by extending the foraging season for beneficial insects into autumn. Bluebeard is well suited to free-draining soils and performs best in a sunny, sheltered position. It tolerates poor and chalky soils well and is a good choice for coastal gardens, being resistant to salt-laden winds. This shrub works well in mixed borders, gravel gardens, or as a low informal hedge, offering structure and colour during a period when the garden can otherwise lack interest.
