Catalpa bignonioides 'Aurea' is a medium-sized deciduous tree with short trunk, rounded, half-open crown, and large, heart-shaped, velvety, golden-yellow to yellow green leaves, purplish when they emerge. Attractive, creamy-white, tubular flowers with purple and yellow spotted throats, bloom in erect panicles in June and July and are followed by long, slender seed pods that stay on branches throughout the winter. Golden Indian Bean Tree is adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions, except too wet, and prefers fertile, loamy, average, moist, well-drained soils. It thrives in sunny, sheltered positions. Needs to be protected from strong and harsh winds as they may damage the leaves. It is resistant to frost and low temperatures. Tolerant of urban pollution. Virtually, pest-free. Low maintenance plant, doesn’t require pruning. Catalpa bignonioides 'Aurea' is an exotic-looking, resilient, ornamental tree perfect for smaller gardens. Excellent as a specimen or accent plant. Great as a shade or street tree.
