Catalpa bignonioides 'Nana' is a dwarf cultivar of the Catalpa bignonioides, commonly known as the Southern catalpa or Indian bean tree. This deciduous tree is known for its showy white flowers, heart-shaped leaves, and long, slender seedpods that resemble beans. The 'Nana' cultivar is a compact, slow-growing tree that typically reaches a height of only 10 to 12 feet (3 to 3.6 meters) with a spread of 8 to 10 feet (2.4 to 3 meters). It has a rounded, spreading habit and is often grown as a specimen tree or in small groupings in landscapes. The tree's foliage is dark green, turning yellow in the fall, and provides excellent shade during the summer months. In late spring to early summer, the tree produces an abundance of fragrant, trumpet-shaped flowers that are white with yellow and purple markings on the throat. The flowers are followed by long, slender seedpods that are 8 to 20 inches (20 to 50 cm) long and persist on the tree through the winter. Catalpa bignonioides 'Nana' prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. It is tolerant of a wide range of soil types and can even grow in poor soils. The tree is also tolerant of heat, drought, and air pollution, making it a good choice for urban landscapes.
