Trachycarpus fortunei, commonly known as the Chinese Windmill Palm, is an evergreen palm grown here as an eye-catching twin trunk specimen. Its foliage consists of large, fan-shaped leaves, deep green in colour, divided into numerous stiff segments that radiate from a central point on long petioles. The trunks are covered in a distinctive fibrous, hairy brown matting, giving a textured, rustic appearance that contrasts well against the architectural canopy of leaves. The twin trunk form creates a fuller, more dramatic structure than a single-stemmed specimen, making it a striking focal point within a garden or courtyard setting. In summer, mature specimens may produce small clusters of yellow flowers held on branched stalks beneath the canopy, followed by small blue-black fruits on female plants, though these are not the primary ornamental feature. This palm is well suited to Mediterranean-style planting schemes and tolerates a range of conditions, including coastal exposure, making it a popular choice for gardens in milder, maritime climates. It performs best in well-drained soil and a sheltered, sunny position, though it will also tolerate some shade.
