Cornus sanguinea, or Bloodtwig Dogwood, is an upright, bushy, multi-stemmed, suckering, deciduous shrub popular for its attractive, vivid red stems and twigs, which look fantastic in winter gardens. The stems are golden yellow at the base of the plant and gradually turn orange and fiery red towards the tip of the plant. Its leaves are dark green and reddish-purple in autumn. The clusters of small, white flowers bloom in summer and are followed by dark purple berries in autumn. Cornus sanguinea can grow in almost any type of soil, but thrives in organically rich, medium moisture, well-drained soils, in full sun or partial shade. For the brightest winter bark, it needs to be planted in full sun. Generally, pest-free. It requires pruning to encourage the growth of new stems. Cornus sanguinea is spectacular when planted in groups, in shrub borders or as an informal hedge. Great for urban, cottage and coastal gardens.
