Cortaderia selloana, commonly known as Pampas Grass, is a spectacular evergreen to semi-evergreen ornamental grass that brings height, movement and architectural interest to the garden. Originally from South America, it has become a well-established garden plant in the UK and is particularly valued for its impressive size and striking plumes.

From late summer into autumn, tall stems rise above the foliage carrying large, feathery flower plumes, which can remain attractive well into winter. Depending on the variety and growing conditions, the plumes may be white, cream or lightly silvered. They catch the light beautifully and move gently in the breeze, making Pampas Grass an excellent choice for creating a dramatic focal point.

Cortaderia selloana forms a large, dense clump of long, narrow, arching leaves. It is best given plenty of space, as mature plants can become substantial, often reaching around 2–3 metres in height and width, with the flowering plumes extending considerably above the foliage.

For the best results, plant Pampas Grass in full sun in a well-drained soil. It is relatively tolerant of different soil types once established, including chalky and coastal conditions, but dislikes sitting in persistently wet ground, particularly during winter. Established plants are generally drought tolerant and require little watering.

Pampas Grass works particularly well as a specimen plant in larger gardens, where its bold form can be appreciated. It can also be used to create an impressive backdrop, screen or architectural feature in contemporary and traditional planting schemes.

Allow sufficient room around the plant for its mature spread and take care when handling the foliage, as the leaves have sharp edges. Old foliage and spent flower stems can be removed in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Gloves and protective clothing are recommended when pruning.

With its impressive scale, graceful foliage and distinctive plumes, Cortaderia selloana is an excellent choice for adding structure and drama to a sunny garden.
