Elaeagnus x ebbingei 'Viveleg', commonly known as Gilt Edge or Golden Elaeagnus, is a robust evergreen shrub valued for its dense, bushy habit. The foliage is particularly notable, with oval leaves that are dark green in the centre and edged with a bright golden-yellow margin, giving the plant a variegated appearance that provides year-round colour and interest in the garden. This shrub forms a dense, rounded structure, making it an excellent choice for hedging, screening, or as a specimen plant. Its vigorous growth and thick foliage create an effective barrier for privacy or windbreaks throughout the year. In autumn, small, inconspicuous but highly fragrant creamy-white flowers appear, hidden beneath the leaves. Despite their unassuming appearance, they release a sweet, powerful scent that can perfume the surrounding air. These flowers are followed by small, oval, reddish-brown fruits that ripen in spring. The flowers are attractive to pollinating insects, offering a valuable late-season nectar source when few other plants are in bloom. Birds may also be drawn to the fruits that follow. This shrub is tolerant of coastal conditions, exposed sites, and a range of soil types, making it a versatile and hardy choice for many garden situations, including areas exposed to wind or salt spray.
