The Argyle Apple is an evergreen tree with a naturally bushy habit, forming a dense, rounded crown of foliage. It is particularly valued for its rounded, silvery-blue juvenile leaves, which are often used in floristry for their striking colour and texture. As the tree matures, the foliage changes to narrower, more elongated grey-green leaves, though the silvery juvenile growth is frequently retained through regular pruning to encourage fresh shoots. The bark is fibrous and rough, peeling in places to reveal patches of cream and grey beneath, adding further interest to the tree's structure throughout the year. Small white flowers appear in summer, though these are not the primary ornamental feature of the tree. The flowers provide a nectar source for bees and other pollinating insects, offering some benefit to garden wildlife. This tree is fast growing and tolerates a range of soil types, including poor or dry soils, making it a versatile choice for various garden settings. It is also notably tolerant of coastal conditions, withstanding salt-laden winds, which makes it a suitable option for gardens in exposed or coastal locations. Its dense, bushy growth can provide shelter for birds and smaller wildlife within the garden.
