Euonymous europeus is a tall, upright, spreading shrub or small tree with oval, glossy green leaves that turn orange-red in autumn. Clusters of small, yellowish flowers with four petals bloom in May and June, and are followed by very attractive, colourful bright pink to red fruits, that resemble popcorns and remain on bare branches long into winter. The fruit is a four-lobed capsule which opens to reveal bright orange seed covering. Euonymous europeus is a tough and long-lived plant. It can grow in most soil types, but prefers alkaline, loamy, moist but well-drained soils, in full sun to partial shade. It tolerates close to full shade, but lack of sun can make autumn colours less attractive. It doesn’t have any serious disease or pest problems. Euonymous europeus, with its attractive berries, is an interesting shrub, perfect for informal, cottage, and wildlife gardens. It is great as a focal point or for hedges and screens.
