Copper Beech is a deciduous tree, grown here as a feathered specimen with branches clothed to ground level, giving it a full, dense habit from an early stage. The foliage emerges a rich purple in spring, deepening to a dark copper-purple through summer before taking on orange and bronze tones in autumn. The dense branching structure and low canopy make it a striking specimen tree, providing good screening and shelter as well as visual impact within a garden setting. Small, inconspicuous flowers appear in spring, followed by beech nuts (mast) in autumn, which provide a food source for birds and small mammals. The tree also supports various insects, contributing to garden biodiversity. Copper Beech is tolerant of a range of soil types, including chalky, sandy, and clay soils, and performs well in both full sun and partial shade. It is a hardy choice for most garden situations, tolerating exposed sites once established, though it prefers well-drained conditions rather than waterlogged ground. Its feathered form makes it particularly useful where a naturalistic, low-branching specimen is desired, whether as a single focal point or as part of a mixed planting scheme.
