Fargesia angustissima, also known as narrow-leaved bamboo or dragon head bamboo, is a species of clumping bamboo native to China. It is a relatively small bamboo, growing to about 6-8 feet tall, with slender green canes that are about 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter. The leaves are narrow and pointed, measuring about 2-4 inches in length and 1/4 inch in width. One of the most notable features of Fargesia angustissima is its hardiness. It can withstand temperatures as low as -20 degrees Fahrenheit, making it an excellent choice for cold climates. This bamboo also tolerates a wide range of soil types, from sandy to clay soils. In addition to its hardiness, Fargesia angustissima is a very low-maintenance plant. It requires very little watering, and does not need to be pruned or fertilized. It prefers partial shade, but can also tolerate full sun as long as it is well-watered. Fargesia angustissima is commonly used as a hedge or screen plant, as it grows densely and quickly. It is also a popular choice for container gardens, as it does not spread aggressively like other bamboo species.
