Hoop pine | Araucaria cunninghamii - Height 30-40cm Width 20-30cm - 1lt

Araucaria cunninghamii, commonly known as Hoop Pine, is an evergreen conifer valued for its distinctive architectural form. Trained as a quarter standard, it develops a clear stem before branching, giving a tidy and structured appearance suited to ornamental planting schemes. The foliage consists of small, sharp, awl-shaped needles arranged densely along the branches, which are held in a tiered, whorled pattern characteristic of the species. Young growth is a brighter green, maturing to a deeper, darker green as the tree ages, giving good year-round colour and texture. Structurally, Hoop Pine develops a distinctive conical to columnar habit when young, with branches arranged in regular horizontal tiers that create a layered silhouette. As the tree matures, the crown becomes more rounded and dome-like, with a bark that develops a characteristic horizontal, hooped pattern on the trunk, giving rise to its common name. This is a non-flowering conifer, reproducing instead through cones, which are not a significant ornamental feature in cultivation. Hoop Pine is well suited to sheltered, mild gardens and performs best in well-drained soil in a sunny position. It is a striking specimen tree for adding structural interest and height to a planting scheme, particularly where an architectural or exotic character is desired.
