Juniperus 'Grey Owl' is an evergreen shrub valued for its spreading, low-growing habit and soft, feathery foliage. The needle-like leaves are silvery-grey with a blue tinge, creating a soft, textured appearance that remains consistent throughout the year. The shrub has a wide, horizontal spreading structure, typically growing wider than it is tall, with branches that arch gracefully towards the ground, forming a dense groundcover effect. This shrub maintains its attractive silvery-blue colouring across all seasons, making it a reliable feature in the garden year-round rather than being tied to a particular season of interest. As a conifer, it does not produce showy flowers; instead, small cones may occasionally appear, though these are not a significant ornamental feature. Juniperus 'Grey Owl' is tolerant of a wide range of conditions and is particularly well suited to coastal gardens, as it withstands salt-laden winds well. It also performs well in dry, well-drained soils and is useful for covering banks, slopes, or large open spaces where a low-maintenance, spreading evergreen is needed. Its dense branching provides shelter for small garden wildlife, offering a sheltered habitat within its structure. This shrub is a practical choice for low hedging, ground cover, or as a structural feature in a mixed border.
