Viburnum tinus 'Lucidum', commonly known as laurustinus, is a vigorous evergreen shrub with large, glossy dark green leaves that provide year-round structure and interest. It grows into a dense, rounded form, making it a popular choice for hedging, screening or as a specimen shrub. From late winter through spring, clusters of flat, pink-tinged buds open to reveal white star-shaped flowers, creating a long season of interest when little else is in bloom. These flowers are followed by small, dark blue-black metallic berries in autumn, adding further seasonal appeal. The flowers are attractive to early pollinators, including bees, offering a valuable nectar source during colder months when forage is scarce. The berries provide a food source for birds through the autumn and winter period, supporting local wildlife. This shrub is tolerant of a range of conditions, including exposure to coastal winds and urban pollution, making it a reliable choice for difficult sites. It copes well with most soil types, including clay, and is reasonably drought tolerant once established. Its dense foliage also makes it useful for creating screening or windbreaks in exposed gardens.
