Texas Privet is an evergreen shrub valued for its dense, compact growth habit, making it an excellent choice for hedging and screening. The glossy, dark green oval leaves provide a rich backdrop throughout the year, retaining their colour and lustre even in winter months. In summer, this shrub produces small, creamy-white flowers arranged in clusters, appearing from June to July. These blooms carry a distinctive scent and are followed by small dark berries in autumn, which persist into winter. The flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects, while the berries provide a food source for birds during the colder months. Texas Privet responds well to regular clipping, maintaining a neat, formal appearance when trimmed as a hedge, or it can be left to grow into a more naturalistic rounded shrub form. Its dense foliage offers good screening and privacy, as well as shelter for small garden birds and beneficial insects. This shrub tolerates a wide range of soil types, including clay, and adapts well to both sunny and partially shaded positions. It is also reasonably tolerant of coastal conditions, making it suitable for gardens exposed to salt-laden winds. Once established, it copes well with urban pollution, making it a practical choice for town and city gardens.
