Syringa vulgaris 'Znamya Lenina' is a striking cultivar of the common lilac, Syringa vulgaris, admired for its richly coloured, fragrant blooms and dependable spring performance. Known for its vibrant violet-purple flowers, this deciduous shrub is a popular choice in UK gardens for both ornamental appeal and traditional lilac fragrance.

Flowering typically occurs in mid to late spring, often around May, when the shrub produces large, upright panicles of densely packed flowers. Each panicle consists of numerous small, tubular blooms that open from darker buds, gradually revealing a rich violet-purple hue. The dense clusters can reach up to 20 centimetres in length, making the display bold and highly noticeable in mixed shrub borders or as a specimen plant. The flowers’ vivid colour contrasts beautifully with the shrub’s fresh green, heart-shaped leaves, which appear in early spring and provide a lush backdrop for the blooms.

One of the key features of ‘Znamya Lenina’ is its powerful and classic lilac fragrance. The sweet, heady scent is released on warm spring days, filling the surrounding garden and attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. The flowers are also excellent for cutting, providing indoor arrangements that carry the characteristic lilac perfume.

The shrub forms a vigorous, upright plant with a broad, rounded habit. It can reach three to four metres in height with a similar spread, making it suitable for larger gardens, mixed shrub borders, or informal flowering hedges. It thrives best in a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil, and prefers neutral to slightly alkaline conditions. Good air circulation helps maintain plant health and reduce the risk of disease.

Pruning should be carried out immediately after flowering to remove spent blooms and maintain an attractive shape while encouraging strong flowering the following year. With its deep violet-purple flowers, classic scent, and reliable growth, Syringa vulgaris 'Znamya Lenina' is a timeless and rewarding addition to spring gardens.
