Magnolia grandiflora 'Alta' is an evergreen tree, trained here as a half standard with a clear stem leading to a compact, upright, narrowly columnar crown. The foliage is glossy, dark green on the upper surface with a distinctive rusty-brown felted underside, providing year-round structural interest. Its dense, uniform habit makes it a good choice where a neat, architectural form is required in a smaller garden space. Large, creamy-white, cup-shaped flowers appear from late spring through summer, each bearing a strong lemon fragrance. These blooms are followed by cone-like seed pods that open to reveal bright red seeds in autumn, adding a further season of interest. The flowers are attractive to pollinating insects, including bees, supporting local pollinator populations. The dense evergreen canopy also offers shelter for small birds throughout the year. This cultivar tolerates a range of soil types, including clay, and is suited to both coastal and inland planting positions, showing good resistance to wind once established. It performs well in full sun to light shade and is a reliable choice for a specimen tree where a compact, upright evergreen form with long-lasting foliage and summer flowers is desired.
