Malus ‘Royalty’ is a small, dense, deciduous tree with broad-oval, half-open crown, attractive dark purple-green leaves, vivid red in autumn. Masses of fragrant, crimson-purple flowers bloom in clusters in spring and are followed by abundance of highly decorative, but not tasteful, dark-red to black, cherry-like fruits in autumn. Attractive to bees and birds. Crab Apple 'Royalty' can grow well in a wide range of soils, but prefers moderately fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soils. It thrives in full sun, but tolerates partial shade. Once established, it is resistant to drought. It can withstand frost, wind, urban pollution, and de-icing salt. Low maintenance plant, requires minimal pruning. Sensitive to fire blight. Malus ‘Royalty’ is the best purple-leaved Crab Apple variety. Very attractive leaf colour and profusion of dark red fruits make it highly ornamental and perfect for small informal, cottage, or urban gardens. Suitable for urban and industrial areas, and for growing in containers.

Arundel Arboretum is a shrub and tree retail nursery with over 40 years of experience.

About Us

During this time, we have developed a large stock of trees, mature evergreen shrubs, conifers, Japanese maples, cedars and olives. What sets us apart from a generic garden center is solid unwavering focus on trees and some bigger shrubs. You will find thousands of trees, hundreds of varieties and lots of experts who are working on the nursery and more than willing to help you to choose a plant for you.

What you will not find is hot tubs, garden furniture and plastic garden gnomes. In a nutshell, trees is what we know and trees is what we do, and only trees (and some shrubs to go with the trees).
