Olive trees (Olea europaea) are an excellent choice for adding a Mediterranean feel to a UK garden, combining evergreen foliage, an attractive silvery appearance and a naturally characterful shape. They are well suited to many parts of the UK when planted in the right position and given good drainage.

Olive trees prefer a sunny, sheltered location where they receive plenty of direct sunlight. A south- or west-facing position is particularly suitable, ideally protected from strong, cold winds. They are tolerant of dry conditions once established and generally prefer soil that is free draining rather than consistently wet. Heavy or poorly drained ground can increase the risk of root problems, so improving drainage before planting may be beneficial.

Established olive trees are reasonably hardy in the UK, although younger plants can be more vulnerable during prolonged periods of severe frost. Container-grown specimens can be moved to a sheltered position during particularly cold weather.

Olive trees are relatively low maintenance and naturally develop an attractive, gnarled structure as they mature. They can also be lightly pruned to maintain their shape and size.

With plenty of sunshine, good drainage and some protection from severe winter weather, an olive tree can become a long-lived and highly attractive feature in a UK garden.
