The Olive is an evergreen tree, grown here as a quarter standard with a compact, rounded head on a clear stem. The foliage is narrow, lance-shaped and silvery-grey on the upper surface with a paler, almost white underside, giving the canopy a soft, two-tone effect that moves attractively in the breeze. The branching habit is gnarled and characterful even on younger specimens, lending an immediate sense of maturity and Mediterranean charm to planting schemes. Small, creamy-white flowers appear in late spring to early summer, clustered along the previous year's growth. These are followed, in warmer and more sheltered positions, by small green fruits that ripen to a dark purplish-black through autumn, though reliable fruiting in the UK depends on a long, warm summer. The tree retains its silvery foliage year-round, providing consistent structure and interest through every season rather than a single dramatic display. It suits sunny, sheltered spots with free-draining soil and is particularly well suited to coastal gardens, courtyards, large pots and other situations where its drought tolerance and resistance to salt-laden winds can be put to good use.
