Switch grass 'Shenandoah' | Panicum virgatum Shenandoah - Height 20-30cm Width 30-40cm - 3lt

Switch Grass 'Shenandoah' is a deciduous ornamental grass forming an upright, clump-forming mound of foliage. The narrow green blades develop deep burgundy-red tips from early summer, with the colouring intensifying and spreading further down each leaf as the season progresses. By autumn, the entire clump transforms into rich shades of red and wine, providing strong seasonal interest. Fine, airy flower panicles appear above the foliage from late summer into autumn, opening in soft pink-red tones before fading to a beige-brown as they mature, adding a delicate, misty texture to the plant. These flower heads persist into winter, along with the dried foliage, offering structural interest and a warm buff colour to the garden during the colder months. The seed heads provide a food source for birds, while the dense clumps offer shelter for small wildlife and beneficial insects. This grass tolerates a range of soil types, including clay, and performs well in both moist and moderately dry conditions once established. It is well suited to mixed borders, prairie-style planting, and naturalistic schemes, and works effectively as a low-maintenance structural feature or in mass plantings.
